NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test)
NEET is a national-level entrance examination conducted in India for admission to undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and allied health science courses in government and private medical colleges across the country. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Purpose and Importance
- Unified Entrance Examination: NEET replaced multiple medical entrance exams previously conducted by different states and institutions, establishing a standardized process for admission to medical and dental courses.
- Admission Criteria: Scores obtained in NEET are used for admission to MBBS/BDS courses in all medical colleges, including AIIMS and JIPMER, which were previously conducted their own entrance exams.
- Eligibility: Candidates must fulfill eligibility criteria related to age, educational qualifications, and nationality as specified by the NTA.
Examination Format
- Structure: NEET is a pen-and-paper test consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
- Subjects: The examination includes questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
- Duration: The duration of the exam is three hours.
- Marking Scheme: Each correct answer awards four marks, with one mark deducted for each incorrect answer.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 17 years old at the time of admission or completing the age on or before December 31 of the year of admission.
- Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
- Nationality: Indian nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and foreign nationals are eligible to apply.
Application Process
- Registration: Candidates must register online through the official NEET website during the specified registration period.
- Admit Card: Admit cards are issued to registered candidates containing details such as exam center, date, and time of examination.
- Examination Fee: Candidates need to pay the prescribed examination fee through online mode using debit/credit cards or net banking.
Examination Centers
NEET is conducted across multiple cities and towns in India, providing candidates with the flexibility to choose their preferred examination center.
Result and Counseling
- Declaration of Result: The NEET result is declared online, indicating the candidate's score and rank.
- Counseling: Counseling for allocation of seats is conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and respective state authorities based on NEET scores and ranks.
